's a radical party such as we've never seen in a presidential race before, that mitt romney has become a captive of it. as we have seen in the senate races that are shifting more and more towards democrats who are expected to lose or be competitive, it's about who the republicans are in washington and really radical message that romney is saddled with and he can't get out of it. the 47% remark is devastating because it really reflects what so many people in the republican majority in washington, in the house particularly, believe, that these are free loaders, that these are people that aren't worthy of our consideration really as human beings in our social contract. romney said out loud what many in his party leave and what an ideology in his party has come to embrace. it was no accident he said it. he stuck with it. >> that would be a radical shift from what a lot of people thought this campaign would be, lynn, and certainly what the romney campaign wanted it to be, which is a referendum on the president. do you agree that this could be a referendum on the republican party and republi

related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up so

among likely voters, 48-46. in nevada, leads by two. new hampshire, leads by seven points. romney launched his presidential campaign there and has a summer home there. we will see. we have three more polls, state polls and big three next week before the debate, a national poll coming out, but you see the environment. one other interesting note on polling, if you average the nine states together in the various leads, almost looks identical to the national polls. five and a half point lead for the president, 49, 44 with rounding, which of course is where all the national polls sit around five points for the president. romney starts his morning in a state that hasn't been able to put into play, pennsylvania. he will speak to veterans at valley forge military academy in a philadelphia suburb. only public event of the day. he will be fund-raising in philadelphia, probably the motivation why he is in philly. slew of national polls show how damaging romney's remark on the 47% has been to his campaign. the most recent national polls trails the president by 5 to 8 points. instead of punchi
